This weekend’s races coincided with the 1 year anniversary of a very personal struggle. That’s why this first PR of 2018 meant so much to me! I shaved 5 minutes off of last month’s 10K time and I’m not even supposed to be running! Its been hard to accept that I’m not as strong as I was a year ago, but I’m learning to be who I am now and evolving from there. For anyone who wakes up every single day in pain wishing your body would stop attacking you, and for every person who fights a silent, invisible illness - knowing you’ll never have a “normal” day again - stay strong! On my way to the race this morning I realized my wallet was missing & I had to turn around and drive back home to find it. I searched the whole house with no luck so I drove off in a rush off after borrowing parking cash from my honey. When I parked in my usual lot in San Jose, one that’s surrounded by homeless people, it occurred to me that maybe my wallet had fallen out of my purse last night and was under my seat. As I jumped out of the car, frazzled & ready to start searching, I locked eyes with a man organizing his little home on the sidewalk. I hurriedly smiled and he smiled back and said, “Good morning. I hope you have fun out there today”. Before I could answer, I saw my wallet under the seat. Without hesitation I grabbed the wallet & pulled out the cash I’d planned to eat and drink with post-race and handed it to him while thanking him and wishing him a good day too. Having the common decency to smile, say good morning and say something nice to another human seems to be going out of fashion. That man made my day and shifted my entire attitude just by acknowledging me with simple kindness. I believe that my exchange with him this morning wasn’t by chance and I’m thankful for the lesson. And now I want to figure out how to help organize a race that benefits local homeless organizations.

Think twice before you dismiss a homeless person. We’re all human and we all got here the same way. And if you’re in the Bay Area, you know the housing struggle is real and most families are 1 paycheck away from the same fate. Be compassionate. Be kind. Be giving. Be loving. Be human. Be a better person.
