Greater Bay Area Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Announces Moms In Training! My interview with a Moms In Training Coach
Our journeys as mothers are unique and individual, but getting back into shape and engaging socially with other moms is a common goal most of us share. As busy moms we also want to remain active in our communities and support the charities we love, but with limited time we find ourselves less involved with meaningful causes. With that in mind, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team in Training is set to launch the Moms In Training program here in the Bay Area this Spring.
Less rigorous than the regular Team In Training program, Moms In Training is a flexible 9-week program that will help moms complete a 5K walk or run while raising money to fight cancer. It’s the perfect opportunity for busy mamas and their babies to get outside, get social and make a difference! The 60-75 minute Saturday morning workout sessions, beginning April 12th, are designed to allow moms to exercise with a stroller. The training culminates with the See Jane Run 5K Walk and Stroller Stride in Alameda on June 22, 2014 (event participation optional).
After watching the moving video above, I was very intrigued by the new program. I interviewed Moms In Training Coach, Nickole Powe, last week to learn more. She was super friendly and very knowledgeable. I could tell she was extremely excited about the Moms In Training Program and looking forward to getting started.
Describe the Moms In Training program and some of the ways it differs from the Team In Training program.
Moms In Training is a way for new moms to keep exercising or get out and start exercising. Unlike the Team In Training program, which is much more intense, most of the training we'll do is in kid friendly locations likes parks. Moms are encouraged to bring their children in strollers. Also, moms are only required to raise $500 - although many raise more. The social aspect will be a big part of Moms In Training. It is family friendly and less intimidating for new runners. A good way for anybody interested in running to come out and meet new people. The training can be as hard as you want it to be. You can stay at a comfortable level or push yourself, learn new techniques and then decide to someday run a 10K or continue on with Team in Training and possibly run a half marathon.
What motivated you to become a Team in Training Coach? What continues to inspire you?
We had just moved to San Jose from Canada and was trying to find a way to meet new people. My uncle had just been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and I decided to join Team In Training. I started as a Mentor, then went on to become a Captain and an Assistant Coach. I felt that the more I could keep giving back to Team in Training would be awesome. Until cancer is completely done, I’m out there to do my part.
I was excited when Moms In Training came up. I'm inspired every day by moms who get up and exercise with their kids. I will continue to raise money and help them achieve their fitness goals.
What is your coaching approach with Moms In Training (new and experienced) runners?
My approach is to encourage moms to take it at their own pace. Be comfortable with what you’re doing and don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Stick to what you know, listen to your body and trust in the program and your coaches. With Moms In Training there is no expectation of a 20 minute 5K while pushing a stroller! I will work with your goals and we will get there.
Moms In Training is currently available in San Francisco, East Bay, North Bay, Peninsula, South Bay and Santa Cruz. The fundraising commitment is just $500, and the program begins April 12th.
