Review: Sony W Series Walkman: Meb Keflezighi Edition
I was lucky enough to receive a Sony W Series Walkman thanks to the nice people at Klout and Klout Perks. (Check out the site and register your social media accounts so that you too can begin to receive perks). As a runner I cannot tell you how excited I was and am about this MP3 player.
Before I start my review – let me take you back to one of my tweets during the Tinkerbell Half Marathon in January:
Guess what? That is NEVER happening again! The Sony Walkman is 100% tangle free. There is no cord to avoid at any time during your run. Which means that I am no longer tied to any music device (namely my iPhone), and I no longer have to worry about whether or not I forgot to take my jewelry off prior to a run. During a race - that's the last thing you want to think about and the LAST thing you want slowing you down.
See my quick, short post-run video review below, then read on for a full review.
I received the Meb Keflezighi (Olympic Silver Medalist & NYC Marathon winner) edition of the MP3 player which not only comes with the standard USB cable, Earbuds, Quick Start Guide, Notes on Water Resistant Specs & holder – but also a book where Meb has listed tips on running & nutrition. He has even listed his favorite power songs for running in the booklet. The MP3 player also came pre-loaded with audio tips from Meb - which I listened to this morning over coffee. Pretty cool to have an Olympian sharing running tips with me!
The player itself is one-piece, water resistant, compact and holds 2GB of music. The enclosed Quick Start Guide easily provides instructions on how to operate the player, and installation was a breeze on the PC.
I was able to drag & drop my music into folder #1, the folder that I want the player to play music from first (see desktop screenshot in the gallery below), while keeping Meb's audio safely tucked away in folder 2. I like that the music can easily be arranged this way. It allows me to also put the music in the order I want to hear it - or I can always shuffle.
Once charged and loaded with music (I went for old school hip-hop to really test the sound quality) I put the player on and took off for a run. It's very easy to turn it off/on, and most importantly you can press pause or adjust the audio easily and at any time. I run on both country roads and bike trails - so it is EXTREMELY important for me to be able to hear what's behind me. I felt very comfortable with these on. In fact, not having the dangling cable with the annoying "one headphone in and one headphone out" allowed me to be even more alert and pay more attention because my hands were completely free. Freedom from cables forever! Yes, please!
The sound quality was fantastic and I didn’t experience any slipping from my ears as with other headphones. Additionally, they fit! YAY! I always have so much trouble finding the perfect sized earpiece.
Bottom line, Sony really hit the mark with this MP3 player. Not only is it MAC and PC compatible, but it's user friendly. Anyone can load this up and get going - regardless as to their tech level. I am officially running cable and iPhone free this weekend at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in San Francisco.
I recommend this product and, hopefully, I will soon have one of these to give away to a lucky reader. Wish me luck!
