Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room 50th Anniversary Event
It took 8 full minutes & a couple of server crashes, but I’m in! I cannot contain my excitement!
As some of you may recall, on February 28th the Disney Parks Blog announced that there would be an event celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Tiki Room at Disneyland. Since that day I’ve been carefully reconsidering my race plans for 2013, as I would happily be dipping into my running budget in order to attend the event, the SHAG cocktail reception and purchase as many anniversary pieces as possible. Luckily I registered early enough today to also receive this limited edition Early Birdies pin.
This is an amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to not only add more of SHAG’s art to my collection, but to finally meet him in person, tell him I fabulous I think he is and show him my tattoo! (A replica of one of his pieces.) In addition to meeting SHAG, I will also meet Featuring Disney Design Group artists, Alex Maher and Mike Sullivan, as well as Disney inspired artists Dave Avanzino, Jody Daily, Jeremy Fulton, Doug Horne, Katie Kelly, Kevin Kidney, Noah, Robert Olszewski, Javier Soto and Yakovetic.
The history of the Enchanted Tiki Room is special as Disneyland itself. When it opened 1963, it was the first show to feature Audio Animatronics technology – an invention created by Walt’s company, WED. This groundbreaking technology would later go on to the World’s Fair and would continue to be implemented throughout Disneyland and, in the future, other theme parks. Rather than read about, go on and hear about it from Walt himself. (Video courtesy of Freedogshampoo on YouTube.)
As an art connoisseur, a huge fan of retro culture, Disneyland, Hawaii and tiki in general - this is going to be an event I will never forget! June 28th cannot come soon enough. I’ll be there with a flower in my hair!
